Why I Believe

There are times when I wonder why I believe what I believe. After all, there are a lot of spiritual paths out there, why should I believe in Jesus? When it all comes done to it, there are three basic truths I can’t escape…

There is a God

I cannot deny that there is a spiritual world out there. There are too many things that can’t be explained with my five senses or science. Every culture in the history of man, from the ancient Egyptians, to the Roman Empire has had some concept of a god or gods. Even modern day atheists seem to fall back to calling out to a god when the going gets tough. Perhaps the biggest thing I can’t get past is the inward feeling that there is something more out there, something bigger than me.

I Suck

The second truth I can’t escape is that given the chance, I will always screw my life up. One of the continual themes of my life is my inability to do the right thing given the chance. My human nature is to be full of laziness, hate, lust and pride. I may have bursts of “doing the right thing,” but I always revert to doing things that are self-centered. No matter how hard I try, I can’t change these things.

I Can’t Earn It

These two conclusions leave me with an interesting paradox, I know there is something spiritual out there, but I feel powerless to earn anything. Every religion or belief system in the world counts on me doing things right to earn something, whether that’s heaven, paradise, or my way up the karma food chain. Only Christianity is not dependent on me doing something right. The core of Christianity is about grace, it’s all about God coming to earth to save me because I could never do anything to save myself. It is only after Jesus saves from screwing my life up that the process of making me good happens.

Well, that’s it. There have been whole libraries written about God, who He is, and why people should believe in Him, but to me it only comes to down to these three simple truths. I could elaborate on these for hours, and would love to discuss them with you. Shoot me an email if you want to know more.

God Bless.
