I’m a Nice Guy, Really…

…But hotlinking drives me nuts. Here’s what you do. You search Google Images, find a photo you like on my site and link to it. Why is this bad? Let me count the ways:

  1. You’re stealing my bandwidth. I pay money for my website to be hosted on LunarPages, and I’m only allowed a certain amount of bandwidth per month. When you tell your page to load a photo off my site,
  2. You’re stealing my work. All my pages end with “Copyright © 2006 Jamie Wallace and Holly Wallace.” That means, I own it and you can’t use it unless I say so.
  3. You’re being rude. Even when I put a bold statement on this page, saying “If you want to use it for something, let me know.” You don’t you just tak it anyway. That’s rude.

So here’s the deal. I don’t sell my photos. I want them to be enjoyed by all. I just want the common coutesy of you asking permission to use them. If it’s a reasonable request, and you are willing to host a copy of your own server, I’ll probably say yes. In fact, I’ve never turned down a request.

Thanks for understanding. Contact me if you’d like to use my work.

Jamie
